Hi we stay here on 17/9, hotel we have been going to for years, hotel service was good and staff friendly, but when we were ready for bed, the bedding was smelling bad, ask to speak with the manager but not in when left, I have emailed the general manager but no reply, will not be back here again.

There?s a lot to like about this hotel - the history, the charming staff, and the location is great for people arriving by car. The half-price second room for families and free kids? breakfast is also a great attraction for people who can take advantage of it. Some aspects of our experience were less positive though - the breakfast was at best mediocre (this is the first four-star hotel I?ve stayed at that served instant coffee at breakfast, for example, and even at 8am the hot buffet food tasted like it had been sat under the lights for several hours). In addition, when we checked in at 6pm, one of our rooms still hadn?t been made up, and there was a bit of a scramble to get it ready for us. Finally, the hotel interiors in general are rather tatty - both the public areas and the rooms are definitely in need of a refresh. Do the negatives outweigh the positives? That?s personal opinion, of course. I?d stay here again if the price was right, but I?ll probably try somewhere else next time I?m in York.

This is 3 star hotel, nothing to make it 4 star in the way of amenities. While the reception area is clean and modern, once behind the facade the corridors and rooms are shaby looking and badly in need of renovation. Our room was dark with brown walls and carpet, with a mix of old brown wood furniture and a large black fridge in the corner of the bedroom. On the plus side, the bath and shower were fine, and a large comfortable bed. The food in the bar was good (same menu as the restaurant) however the breakfast buffet was only fair, with the fried eggs swimming in oil and many of the hot items overcooked due to the excessively high temperature of the hotplates. Parking is free, with regular busses (19 and 30) to and from York from stops outside.

Now I am certain the world has gone absolutely mental.!!!! We booked the FAIRFIELD MANOR MERCURE HOTEL in York................. 4* my arse!!!!! Dog friendly hotel, NOT A PROBLEM, but what IS A PROBLEM is when you are put in a room that someone's four legged animal has been in before you. As a mere mortal human being (NOT A VIP guest like the dogs, who had treats on arrival in the form of bone shaped dog biscuits, no human treats I hasten to add) we had to endure a room full of dog hair, dog urine, and the stench of wet dog all night which made me physically sick ? my throat was swollen and I didn't sleep a wink..... , unless a mere human got hungry in the night and decided to chew on the cheap, nasty bedside cabinets, me being me with my suspicions mind, suspects that the teeth marks belong to a canine variety, which was not an attractive feature!!! The room hasn't been updated since 1980 and they class as 4*.!!!!! I'm no expert, but I've stayed in many hotels and this in my opinion is 2* at best. UNACCEPTABLE ON ALL LEVELS. I do not have a problem with dog friendly places, but why not just allocate specific rooms for people with dogs, it's not rocket science ffs!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice hotel and staff the breakfast was really good but the rooms are old and badly need an upgrade especially the bathrooms. The grounds are quite nice and there is access to a gym behind the hotel as well.

While we found it ok to stay for a single night, I don't think we could stay for much longer. The positives about this hotel are the cleanliness and the chap on Reception. He is delightful. Breakfast was fine - normal / bog-standard and not rushed (although the coffee could be better) and the shower had a good flow. Disabled parking is also good. The check-in and check-out process is also stress-free. However, there are several aspects that we think require improvement in order to make this hotel more than an overnight stay for business purposes. The mattress is far too firm. It was like sleeping on a block of cheese! The pillows are far too small and too hard. This did not make for a pleasant sleep. The noise from the fan in the bathroom when you switch the light on is intolerable. The noise from other peoples bathroom fan is also too noisy. I was woken at 5:50am by the adjoining room because of this. The noise from other rooms doors constantly slamming is also annoying. The lift to the first floow felt unsafe and bounced every time it landed. I would have taken the stairs but my Mother is disablesd so we had to use it. The fact that the call button is also held on with sellotape seemed worrying. Evening bar staff seemed flustered. People were served meals and then had to wait for cutlery with hot food going cold while they went back to retrieve them. I also think resting plates on the piano in reception is not classy. I ordered 2 x glasses of wine and a latte. It took 10 mins and a reminder for the latte to be served and then a cappucino was brought, not a latte. This seemed poor for a Wednesday evening. It's not like the place was packed. The bathroom in the room is concerning. There is no hand rail to hold in order for you to exit the bath when you have had a shower and you have to hold on to the high towel rail in order to get out. The toilet paper is also very cheap / not good quality and we found it unpleasant. It is a shame that these small aspects arose but I think that they could be easily changed and could add to a much better experience for guests.

Just spent a celebration weekend at the hotel, Friday to Saturday. Meeting room made available Friday pm and Saturday am. A Dinner Dance was held on Saturday night which was a great success with excellent food and service managed by Gourav who dealt with all needs. The accommodation was to a good standard and all the staff were always helpful and dealt with all issues which were very few. We would certainly use as an ideal location with York with easy access.

My advice if you are looking for a well run 4 star hotel to stay in do not pick this place. It's a very nice place which is extremely badly run. The 1st night we were told he had not booked a table for 10 people. The restaurant was empty. But eventually they found us a table in an empty restaurant. The restaurant staff are very rude especially a man called Ben. The Lady who severed us on our last night was amazing working on her own serving drinks and food on her own. Maybe Ben should take some pointers from her on customer service. Last but not least when it's warm you can't sit inside when it's warm as there is no air conditioning.

I wasn't sure what to expect due to some mixed reviews, however, I was very pleasantly surprised. From the lovely welcome from the young lass on reception, the booking in process was quick and smooth. The room was surprisingly spacious, which was a bonus because we had our dog (with accompanying ton of extras - bed, cage - which is akin to travelling with a toddler en tow). We arrived mid evening, but just in time to get some food from the bar. Nothing fancy but a reasonable choice of some really good burgers from the Twisted burger range (includes vegan choices...), as well as some decent salads, starter choices and desserts. Dogs are welcome at the bar area, so you can eat with your companion beside you on lead. Prices are pretty much average for the area. The bar tender was a really helpful and cheerful lad. We stayed for 3 nights, didn't partake the breakfast option because we had snacks with us and don't really do breakfast. The decor and bathrooms are a bit jaded but it felt comfortable and non pretentious, and you get a decent selection of 80's back music which suited us older peeps (even though the 80s was only yesterday...right?..). It was quite hot in the rooms but it was 28 degrees outside and there is a fan in the wardrobe that you can use. Beautiful grounds surrounding the hotel and nice seating area at the front. Good free parking on site and It is only around £6 - £8 for a taxi into York - I would absolutely go back if I need accommodation in York rather than book a city hotel. Getting out onto Shipton Road, if heading to the ring road, can be "interesting" due to the speed and volume of traffic.

It is true that the rooms need updating but the rooms and bed were huge and comfortable. Hotel is set in beautiful grounds and there are large reception areas by the bar for drinks. Breakfast was really good. Overall really good value plus 2 friendly hilarious taxi drivers to add to our visit in to York for the evening !

The hotel itself is dated yet pleasant, what makes this hotel exceptional is the staff, Ben in particular worked tirelessly, in the bar and restaurant, even on reception on one occasion, he did this always with a pleasant manner and nothing was too much trouble. Jeff on checkout was also friendly and helpful. Normally given the condition of the rooms we would not recommend here but the staff make this place well worth a visit, The food was also prepared to a very good standard and breakfast waa good quality. Also to mention the lady on reception whos name I forgot was very pleasant.

Had a lovely 3 night stay at this hotel. We based ourselves here and did day trips exploring both the town of York to the beautiful countryside. Can?t say enough about the Manager Deshpal who is running the desk in the morning, (we had bags go missing a month prior and we advised Deshpal that it ?may? turn up and he kept an eye out for it and was as excited as I was seeing the bag again) to the friendly & helpful restaurant and bar staff. They all always had a smile on their faces and made you feel very welcome. It?s a older hotel with heaps of character which we loved .. a break from the modern hotels we have had home. Would highly recommend this hotel. Easy access to York by bus across the road as parking is limited in town.

We stayed here on a coach holiday to Yorkshire. The food was so good, especially the vegetarian choices. We had a three course menu with tea and coffee. Each course had 3 choices. Vegetables were fresh with a large variety and cooked to perfection instead of the overcooked peas and carrots that usually appear. The cooked and continental breakfast was everything you could wish for. Staff were all friendly and helpful. Only niggle was room too warm and stuffy even with window open and no heat on. Solved by using the fan. Also our large towels kept disappearing even though they were not left in the bathtub. More quickly supplied on request. The beds were firm and comfortable. Would highly recommend this hotel.

Enjoyed a splendid weekend escape from dull Glaswegian mundanity, here, in a retro futuristic time capsule. The Greco architecture of the facade belies the fascinating Kubrick carpets and the Ridley Scott ceiling tiles awaiting you. The sprawling hotel grounds are sublime, peaceful and calming. Tall trees, grasslands and picnic tables. The staff were accommodating, and easily accessible. Vipin the barman was superbly friendly, preparing our drinks with a smile, and gentle but not intrusive chitchat. Despite a wedding party taking up most of the bar, he made sure my guest was served a complicated coffee, when everyone else was ordering consummation shots. The morning after, having ordered a reasonably priced yet delicious room service breakfast, we checked out simply and with no fuss, supported by the kind, confident capability of Jeff, the front desk manager. After surprising us by announcing that our breakfast was complimentary that day, (wow!) we set sail to the north, safe in the knowledge that neither of us would forget this trip, the Fairfield, or how to get home again. Thank you for a magnificent weekend.

Good location for York with park and ride in walking distance or a couple of minutes drive. Didn't eat in the restaurant but had breakfast included which was ok. Plenty of choice, only fault I would say is that the hot choices were not very hot , some items were barely warm, but maybe that depends what time you eat and how busy the turnover of food is. Room was large and well equipped. Bed was a little firm for us but that's just our personal preference. As others have said some of the decor/ furniture /fittings could do with an update but everything was clean and fit for purpose. Use of the Roko leisure centre is included in the room rate, think this could be better advertised as we only knew about it from a previous visit, we weren't told about it at check in . Staff all friendly. No major complaints and would stay again.
