Alston station !!!!!!!We have been here before they installed the monstrosity of a platform covering - where were the planning department when this was sneaked through!!!This used to be a picture postcard station, it is now ruined!

The South Tynedale Railway provides an interesting narrow guage railway excursion from Alston to Slaggyford and return. Utilising the disused trackbed of the Haltwhistle to Alston branch line, the hard work of enthusiasts offers a glimpse of what one day may become a re-opening of most of the entire line. If one day it might be possible for trains to use the Lambley Viaduct again what a wonderful tourist attraction this would be, bringing huge economic benefit to South Tynedale. The obstacles are no doubt numerous and the costs enormous but we can dream. For now, however, the existing facililty offers a splendid climax to a day out in the North Pennines.

We were there for the 40th anniversary celebration. The club members are very nice and very helpful if you have any questions. The little cafe is very nice and the food there is very tasty. We will visit them again. It's definitely worth a drive to the last stop and the indescribable view.

First off we didn't actually go on the train but we did call into cafe which is on the platform. You have the option of sitting in or outside if the weather is nice, decent selection of sandwiches etc in a lovely setting, staff very pleasant and prices reasonable, dog friendly. Worth calling in if your visiting Alston or passing through.

Easy to find good size free car park, staff in ticket office were great really friendly, helpful & very good with my excited kids, the train ride was really good too, however the cafe was the total opposite I only visited for a takeaway coffee & left without also told them to keep the money my daughter was a little muddy after our walk I told her to come down from a chair which she did then was fiddling with a key on a storage cupboard she was not going to break anything & certainly was not a disruption to other diners, I told her several times not to touch anything then the lady serving me quite abruptly told me to tell her to stop touching everything!!! I sharply told her "can you not hear me repeatedly telling her to keep off" if I hadn't of walked out I believe she would of told me to leave

Journeyed from Slaggyford but sadly the buffet car owners were on holiday ( in peak season - not sure why????) And had to pay for tickets at Alston. But not a problem for the honest folks amongst us. Journey shows the scenery off at its best. Alston is interesting to wander round, but shops are dying and not occupied. Best place to eat is at the station cafe where bread is baked daily and the chips are wondrous.

We're staying nearby, so weheaded down on Saturday. We got tickets nice and easy from the helpful, friendly staff. We went for a short walk along the path at the side of the line while we waited for the train to arrive. It was a nice ride along the line to Slaggyford, where they had a buffet car serving drinks and snacks. It was nice that we were able to take the dogs on the trip as well.

We took the railway from Alston to Slaggyford return. Volunteers running the railway couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. The cafe at Slaggyford did great hot chocolates, and was 100% doggy friendly. Was such a scenic journey, even with it raining. Next time we will consider walking part of the route and getting the train the rest of the way.

Cafe at Alston station really good but closed Monday and Tuesday. Steam Trains run most weekends. You can walk or cycle along railway track all the way to Haltwhistle. Steep detour off route at Lambley Viaduct but otherwise easy walking.
